Attend FREE talks at the RMS Learning Zone!
Back by popular demand, our FREE Seminar Theatre will be winging its way to the RMS Learning Zone at mmc2025 incorporating EMAG 2025.
Our daily programme of introductory talks are free to attend – alongside everything else in the exhibition hall. This year, talks will be centred around four themes:
- Techniques and Practice - The Basics
- An Introduction to Open Source Software for Image Analysis and Hardware for Instrument Building
- The RMS Community and Career Development
- Outreach and Public Engagement
Other Learning Zone attractions
Always a highlight of the mmc exhibition, the RMS Learning Zone is the place to go for help and advice on all things microscopy!
Our team of RMS volunteers will be on hand to explain fundamental techniques and provide demonstrations using an array of microscopes and other equipment on the zone. Feel free to bring your samples along and ask for advice!
This year, the Learning Zone will also feature:
- A portable SEM that is part of the UK STEM Educational Outreach Programme, generously supported by Hitachi, Oxford Instruments and the RMS, with financial support from the Gauntlet Trust and the Quekett Microscopical Club. This SEM is one of two which are loaned to schools for 4-6 weeks at a time for students to conduct independent research projects.
- School visits. We are looking forward to welcoming both school groups and teachers to the Learning Zone this year! There will be opportunities to use the microscopes as well as dedicated talks in the Learning Zone Seminar Theatre.
- An historical display containing “Replica Rara” – a collection of instruments commissioned by Dr James McCormick in the early 1970s. We will also be showcasing the progress Zeiss Archivist, Wolfgang Wimmer has achieved making copies of the letters between Ernst Abbe and Carl Zeiss available for public view.
- The RMS Zone. This area offers a more relaxed spot to find out about the Royal Microscopical Society, with information on membership, future events and training courses as well as a chance to meet a number of our Council, committee and staff members.
