Caren Norden is a cell and developmental biologist who is the head of the Cell Biology of Tissue Morphogenesis Research Group at the IGC in Oeiras Portugal. Her research aims to understand ‘how cells form tissues’ using the vertebrate retina as a model system and investigating phenomena across scales and using cross-disciplinary approaches.
She studied in Hannover, Germany and did her masters at the the Mount Sinai school of Medicine in New York City studying the emergence of polarity of neurons in culture. In 2002 she started studying polarity and cytokinesis in the budding yeast saccharomyces cerevisiae. she used her knowledge in cell biology and moved to understand neuroepithelial development in zebrafish at the University of Cambridge, UK during her postdoc. In 2010, she started her own group at the MPI-CBG in Dresden, where she expanded her research portfolio and made important discoveries in different contexts of retinal development.
Caren Norden is the deputy director of science of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência since October 2019. In 2002 she started her PhD At the ETH Zurich in Switzerland. Her works has previously been recognized by an HFSP Career Development Award and the José A. Campos-Ortega Young Scientist Award of the German Society for Developmental Biology. In addition, she became a member of the EMBO Young Investigator Network in 2015 and full EMBO member since 2020.
