Speakers
John Dolan
John joined Instruct-ERIC in 2021 as a communication and outreach project associate before taking on his current role as communication and project manager in 2024. He earned his MSc in media science and communication, social science, and media from Cardiff University and completed his undergraduate studies at Oxford Brookes University.
José María de Pereda
José did his PhD under the supervision of Prof. José Manuel Andreu at the Margarita Salas Center for Biological Research (CSIC, Madrid). As a postdoc, he worked at the University of Vienna (Austria), the University of Leicester (UK), and the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute (La Jolla, USA), where he specialized in the structural biology of integrins and associated proteins, primarily using X-ray crystallography. Since 2003, he has been a group leader at CIC, where he studies the structural and mechanistic basis of cell adhesion and signaling. He has contributed to understanding the architecture and regulation of hemidesmosomes, which are integrin-based cell adhesion complexes in epithelia. He also investigates the regulation of Rap1-mediated signaling and its alterations in cancer. He is currently studying how maternal anti-integrin alloantibodies affect integrin function. He carries out interdisciplinary research that integrates structural biology methods — including X-ray crystallography, SAXS, and cryo-EM — with biochemical, biophysical, and cellular approaches.
Lefteris Zarkadas
Lefteris obtained his PhD in structural biology from the University of Patras, studying nicotinic acetylcholine receptors at the Hellenic Pasteur Institute, and later worked as a postdoctoral fellow at IBS on the structural characterization of ion channels using cryo-EM. His expertise spans membrane protein biochemistry and cryo-EM-based structural determination. Since 2021, he has been part of the IBS-ISBG EM platform within Instruct-ERIC, where he is a cryo-EM specialist. He oversees a Thermo Scientific Glacios Cryo-TEM, contributes to the ESRF Thermo Scientific Titan Krios Cryo-TEM CM02 facility, and provides end-to-end support for users from sample preparation to data interpretation.
