LIG Nanowise will be demonstrating their new NANOPSIS super-resolution imaging system on stand 524 in the free mmc2017 exhibition.

LIG Nanowise's new super lens technology will be available to view and demo on the NANOPSIS stand at mmc2017. This technology allows you to see structures which are 90 nanometres in size (90 billionths of a metre) where a regular optical microscope is limited to seeing 200 nanometre structures by limitations in physics. By attaching a microsphere cap to a regular objective lens you can achieve super-resolution imaging and break the optical diffraction limit for visible light. These optically transparent microspheres (microscopic beads one hundredth of a millimetre in size and totally translucent) translate beams of light on the invisible spectrum into a highly magnified virtual image which can be seen through a microscope.

Professor Lin Li and his team has successfully translated this technology into NANOPSIS; a market ready microscope incorporating this lens which has the potential to significantly accelerate R&D in a number of critical fields including drug discovery, cancer research and microelectronics production.

This cutting-edge, patented, SMAL technology modifies standard white light microscopes to dramatically increase their resolution, allowing users to view the nanoscopic world as never before seen with standard optical microcopes.

The NANOPSIS imaging system works by using the microsphere lens to gather invisible sub-wavelength light and convert it into a virtual super-resolution image. Bespoke software then stitches these images together in real time to generate full colour, widefield scans of materials and life samples – resolving details down to 70 billionths of a metre (70 nanometres) in size, surpassing the theoretical limit of standard optical microscopy (200 nanometres).

Professor Lin Li, Chairman on LIG Nanowise said“Researchers can use our microscopes to validate samples and carry out routine work in their own laboratory without having to waste valuable time booking into an imaging centre. This is because unlike other super-resolution technologies, which require a huge amount of expertise, our NANOPSIS nanoscopes can be used by anyone with basic undergraduate scientific training – making it fast, convenient and highly cost effective.

“Equally important, is the fact that these reliable, repeatable imaging results are delivered at the frontline of research, rather than part of a disjointed process in an inaccessible centre. Our aim is to make super-resolution imaging more accessible to researchers across the globe.”

Crucially for biological and medical applications, the optical lens does not have to be in contact with the sample and so removes the risk of potential damage.

Additional financial benefits of SMAL powered NANOPSIS nanoscopes include faster sample throughput, greater power efficiency and a significantly cheaper investment compared to other super-resolution microscopes currently available on the market – costing 5 times less than technology rivals STED and STORM (used for biological imaging), and estimated to be 10 times cheaper than a standard electron microscope.

mmc2017 is the latest in an impressive list of events dating back to the 1960s starting with the Micro conference and exhibition series. This later became MicroScience which grew ever-bigger until 2010. The RMS hosted the European Microscopy Congress in 2012 which was the catalyst for the current Microscience Microscopy Congress series.
